The city of Fremont took a first step in creating a downtown Tuesday night, selecting developers to help plan the area, which leaders hope will one day look like Main Street USA.

The city council chose Capitol Avenue Partners and Blake Hunt Ventures of Danville as co-developers to help plan and potentially develop Fremont’s downtown area at the heart of Fremont Boulevard and Mowry Avenue. City leaders have long felt that Fremont is significantly “under retailed” in shopping and dining compared with other cities, and lacks “much needed” retail specialty stores to pump up the city’s economy, according to a city news release.

City leaders now need to develop a financing plan to see how all of this would be paid for, which could take about six months, officials said. If all goes as planned, construction on the new downtown wouldn’t take place for at least three years.
