Landmarks Will Stay But Won't Stay Put

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The landmarks at Trolley Square won't be removed as the mall undergoes a massive renovation. But the unique water tower and trolley car won't be staying put either.

To make way for a planned Whole Foods grocery store those landmarks will have to be moved. The water tower will shift just a few feet to the south. But the trolley car and the building that now houses Wells Fargo Bank will move from the east to the west side of the complex.

Salt Lake City's Historic Landmark Commission is expected to green-light the moves tomorrow.

It's good news for those closely watching the project. During a series of open houses, residents raised objections to any plan that ruined the mall's historic nature. Thomas Mutter, former chairman of the Central City Neighborhood Council, says he is pleased that Trolley's favorite fixtures will be saved.
